Mexico is often overlooked as a producer of high-end lots within the world of specialty coffee. Lack of investment and infrastructure, pricing volatility, access to education and training, among other things, have left many Mexican producers at a disadvantage when it comes to demanding a fair price for the coffees they produce. Despite these numerous challenges, this “community micro-lot” stands out as an excellent example within the
rich tradition of Mexican coffee. Hailing from the town of San Pedro Ocopetatillo, Oaxaca, nestled in the Sierra Mazateca Mountains, this community lot was produced by primarily indigenous Mazatec peoples who have called these mountains home for thousands of years. A special offering more than worthy of our Reserve line, we’re incredibly honored to give this
coffee the attention it deserves. In the cup we’re tasting Meyer lemon, milk chocolate, and green apple.

About Mexican Coffee:

The Sierra Mazateca is part of the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca mountain range, in the far north of the state of Oaxaca. Located within the Sierra Mazateca, are various small, neighboring coffee-growing municipalities where our distributors are proud to work with many indigenous coffee producers to create what they call “community micro-lots.”

This Reserve lot is from the municipality of San Pedro de Ocopetatillo, where 85% of the less than1,000-person population speaks the Mazatec language and where the average lot size is 66kg. 25 farmers contributed their coffee to this washed coffee, and it is made up of the Typica, Mondo Nuvo, Caturra, and Bourbon varieties which were grown at 1,600 m.a.s.l.
