Rancilio Silvia M Espresso Machine
Why we like it:
For the size and price of the machine, it makes an impressively consistent and lovely espresso! Affectionately known in the coffee community as Miss Silvia, this machine asks for a bit of commitment and affection, but if you're willing to meet Miss Silvia on her terms, you will be rewarded with great espressos and lattes. So there is a learning curve, and you will need a decent grinder, but the machine is built to last, so once you dial in your technique, you'll have many, many years of great coffee. It is obvious that Silvia is home machine modeled after professional machines. The overall design, size of portafilter, and quality of internals have the feel of a commercial machine, and there is actually enough metal in there for temperature stability and for longevity. We urge anyone thinking about getting a home machine to start with Silvia. The model has been upgraded over the years, but not by much. This piece is a classic now and won't be going away any time soon. And for good reason.
This machine will need an adequate grinder to make a good espresso. We recommend the Baratza Virtuoso as a minimum and the Baratza Preciso as a good option for this model.
